OK, let’s put your mind at ease: when it comes to bronzers and blushes, you never have to choose one over the other. Pinky promise. There’s nothing stopping you from wearing both at the same time, provided you pick the right shade and – most importantly – apply them in the right place.

A healthy glow

Bronzer can help create the illusion of a tan, but you need to choose your product carefully. “Choosing one that’s too dark can make your face look dirty, while one that has too much shimmer won’t look natural and will enhance every wrinkle and pore,” says makeup artist Tamryn Jefferies. So, we get it: the stakes are high.

To find your perfect match, Tamryn suggests you pick a bronzer no more than two shades darker than your skin tone and use it sparingly. “The biggest bronzer mistake is applying too much of it, so use a large powder brush to start out slow then build up to your desired intensity. When in doubt, less is more,” she says. “You want to stroke it on where the sun would naturally hit your face – on your temples near your hairline and the tops of your cheeks.”

Another great thing about bronzer is that you can also use it to contour. “Sweep it in the hollows of your cheeks to sculpt cheekbones and slim down a square face by using it along the sides of your jaw,” Tamryn adds.

A pretty flush

Blush is a great way to add a little healthy-looking colour to your cheeks. “Your perfect shade will be the colour you flush naturally, but you can play around if you’re feeling adventurous,” Tamryn explains. “Baby pink or soft, rose-coloured pinks will suit those who are fair; plummier-shades work for those who are darker-skinned and peach is a safe bet as it suits absolutely everyone.”

But you still need to resist the urge to get a little heavy-handed. “Don’t use your blush to contour or put it anywhere near your temples like you would a bronzer,” Tamryn warns. “You’ll end up looking like you’ve just stepped off a treadmill. Rather add it to the apples of your cheeks and sweep outwards and upwards. Again, if you have large pores on your cheeks, anything too shimmery or frosty-looking will be a no-no. If in doubt, pick something matte.”
