As every hay fever sufferer will know, seasonal allergies can wreak havoc on your skin. Luckily, a few simple makeup tricks can hide the irritation.

Ah, the joys of allergies. If you are among the unfortunate people who cringe in anticipation of seasonal changes rather than waxing lyrical about the joys of spring and the loveliness of autumn, you likely suffer from seasonal allergies like hay fever. There’s no two ways about it – allergies suck.

Fortunately, there are ways to look your best even when the pollen count is off the charts. Martie Olivier, beauty therapist, makeup artist and owner of The Beauty Room in Malmesbury, has a few tricks up her sleeve when it comes to itchy eyes and red noses. “It’s all about calming down the skin and finding ways to lessen the irritation,” says Martie.

Here are her top tips for camouflaging allergy symptoms:

Reducing redness around the nose and cheeks

According to Martie, the type of foundation and moisturiser you choose plays a big role in how effectively you'll be able to reduce redness around the nose and cheeks. "I'd start with a moisturiser that has anti-inflammatory properties to calm the skin. This I'd follow with a green-tinged concealer and a liquid foundation, steering clearing of too much powder."

Limiting irritation around the eyes

Runny eyes are one of the most disruptive symptoms associated with seasonal allergies. When your eyes keep watering, it becomes basically impossible to keep your mascara and eyeshadow in check if you have to keep dabbing at it every few minutes. Martie recommends a good waterproof mascara, or mascara alternatives.

“When your eyes are runny, it can be quite the tall order to keep mascara in place,” she says. “This is why I normally recommend that my clients opt for a mascara alternative, such as a lash tint, lash lift treatment or lash extensions that draw attention to the eyes without the need for daily makeup application.”
