We recently caught up with Runé Louw, owner and head stylist at HT Hair Design in Malmesbury, who’s safely at home with her family, to find out more about a DIY haircare routine for glossy locks. Here is what she had to say.

It all starts with your diet

“Healthy hair starts from the inside out,” says Runé. “We all need to take good care of our immune systems at this time, and while you’re at it, you might as well boost your intake of hair-healthy vitamins as well. Biotin, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, and Vitamin E are your top five follicle-friendly compounds.

Feeling a little overwhelmed with all the supplement choices at your local pharmacy or healthcare store? Start by taking a spoon of cod liver oil every morning. It may not taste all that great, but you will love the shine it gives to your hair.”

Take it easy while you can

Runé recommends taking seeing the lockdown period as a holiday for your hair. “If you like a very defined, carefully styled look when you’re out and about, odds are you normally use quite a bit of product and heat styling on your hair. Use this time at home to give your hair a little break from it all. You don’t need to wash your hair every day (it strips away essential hair oils), and when you do, let it try naturally. Believe me, your hair will thank you in the long run!”

Use your store-bought treatments like a pro

It’s a great time to treat your hair and scalp to a few choice treatments. Before applying your treatment, wash your hair as normal. Gently pat your hair dry (don't rub), part it into a few sections (four to eight - depending on the thickness and length of your hair) and apply the treatment while it is still slightly wet, working it in from root to tip.

Many hair treatments will have special instructions, so make sure to read it well to find out how long you should leave it in, and how frequently you can use it. Also remember to wear an old T-shirt or styling cape when you apply a mask or oil treatment – some may stain, so rather play it safe.

There you have it – a few top tips to look your lockdown best while we all work together to flatten the curve.
