Sunscreen has quickly moved from being something you throw in your bag before you hit the beach, to an essential part of our daily skincare routine. And, as one of the best defences we have against premature ageing, it’s even more important to choose the perfect sunscreen formulation to protect your face against the harsh African sun.

So whether you’re trying to prevent pigmentation or keen to reduce your risk of skin cancer, sunscreen is as close to a miracle in a bottle that you’re likely to find. To make sure your relationship with your new skin saviour is a long and happy one, we spoke to registered dermatologist, Dr Nomphelo Gantsho from the Cape Skin Doctor, about choosing the right sunscreen for your face.

Don’t use a body formula on your face

Dr Gantsho says, “It’s important to know which sunscreen is best for your skin as certain types of sunscreens, especially those formulated for use on your body, can cause breakouts in acne-prone skin when used on your face.”

Hold on, so you can’t use the same sunscreen for your face as you use on your body? “It’s not advisable,” says Dr Gantsho. She continues, “The formulation of many sunscreens can be too greasy to use on your face. Look for a light sunscreen specifically formulated for your face that includes the term non-comedogenic, which means that it is formulated not to block pores.”

Work with your skin type

If you have sensitive skin or a particular condition like eczema, Dr Gantsho suggests that you always check the ingredients of the product before you buy it, to make sure it’s the right fit for your skin type.
