Whether you’re just a little sunburnt or struggle with an inflammatory skin condition like rosacea, a ruddy-looking complexion is not a vibe. You can cover up mild redness with a mid- to high-coverage foundation, but if you really want to blitz redness like a pro, you need to get clever with a correcting product.

Go for green

If you look at the colour wheel, you’ll see that green sits directly opposite red, meaning that the two shades – when layered – neutralise each other. This is why, when it comes to concealing redness, green is your new BFF.

“If you’re red all over, apply a green-tinted primer to your entire face before proceeding with foundation,” says makeup artist Tamryn Jefferies. “Don’t be scared of it. It might look very green in the tube, but you can use a sponge to blend it out and create a subtle wash that’ll help diffuse any ruddiness.”

Out, darn spot!

If you’re dealing with localised redness in the form of a super angry spot or a patch of broken blood vessels, usually found on the side of your nose, then it’s better to just cover the area using a green colour-correcting concealer. “Many people get confused about what they should apply first – green concealer or foundation,” says Tamryn. “If you apply green concealer first, your foundation can swipe it away. If you use colour-correcting concealer last, then you have this weird-looking green spot. Layering regular concealer on top of that can end up looking patchy and if you try to blend it out you run the risk of wiping away the green.”

To fix the dilemma, Tamryn has a hack: “I apply foundation as per usual. Then, I take a little green colour-correcting concealer and mix it with a little regular concealer to create a redness-neutralising custom blend. I use this to spot treat any redness before setting it with a light dusting of translucent powder that I sweep on using a large powder brush.”
