How to pull off this year's red-hot hair trend
Red seems to be one of this year’s biggest hair trends, making waves on catwalks and sidewalks all around the world. Naturally, this begs the question – are you able to pull it off?
Deidré Geldenhuys, owner and head stylist at Piatra's Hair Design, is always in favour of experimentation, but cautions that there are a few very important things to consider before you take the plunge of choosing a permanent shade of crimson. Here are two important questions she normally asks when a client who is tempted to go red:
Not all reds were created equal
To start with, Deidré first establishes which shade of red her client has in mind.
"After the boom of the balayage, red is making a comeback. We are seeing more people embracing their natural red hair, and the requests for copper tones have also increased, even for blondes who see how beautiful rose gold can be. In terms of darker hues, a lot of luscious blue-based reds are popping up, as opposed to super bright copper-based reds," says Deidré. "Also, remember that it is always a good idea to have it done professionally, as your hairdresser will be able to formulate your colour depending on your complexion."
Can you handle some maintenance?
According to Deidré, the main thing to remember is that red needs maintenance, so you need to be committed before taking the plunge.
"Red fades away over time, because red molecules are bigger than other colour molecules, causing it to wash away. To keep your red lively, make sure to use a colour-saving shampoo and conditioner. There are also plenty of red pigmented masks to consider if you want to refresh your colour. You can even ask for a semi-permanent colour service at your salon - there are some great colour lines in the professional industry that will keep the integrity of your hair intact, as well as renewing your colour."
