How to regrow your hairline after braids

26 November 2019 | Yakupha Nkosinkulu

While they are great options when it comes to protecting your natural hair, box braids and cornrows can damage your hairline. We share a few tips to help you regrow your hairline after braids.

Box braids and cornrows have adorned the heads of people of all ages for decades. Holding their position steady on the trending charts, these protective styles are known to be a good way to shield natural hair from the elements. But let’s face it - a receding hairline is also not a look we’re after. So, what can you do when you want to nail your look, without your fragile edges flying out the window?

Know when it’s time to take a break

Hiding under a seemingly less-severe protective style such as weaves and wigs doesn’t prevent hair loss from your frontline. In fact, it can worsen it. “It’s an endless cycle, but one we don’t need to fall victim to,” says Lucy Mibey, hair stylist and owner of Braids Sensation. Let’s cut to the truth: There are no quick fixes. “Taking a break from plaiting for about 3 months - or more - is the best cure for your hairline,” says Lucy, “giving your hair a chance to regrow under natural, breathable conditions”.

Protect your hair while you sleep

Bedtime routines also play part in the health of our hairline, especially when dealing with the aftermath of tight braids. Lucy recommends using a satin bonnet or headwrap instead of materials like cotton or polyester, as these dry out our hair and can cause further breakage when hair rubs against the fabric.

Learn to love castor oil

Jamaican Black Castor Oil nourishes hair by improving blood circulation to the scalp, and promoting hair growth.“Apply to your edges and massage every other day to promote hair growth and strengthen the weakest part of your hair,” advises Lucy.

And what about the next time you decide to have another hairdo and find yourself wincing for dear life because, well, there’s no beauty without pain? Free yourself from that myth and ask your stylist to be gentle. There’s no glory in having bald edges, so be kind to yourself and put your frontline first.
