There once was a time when contouring was the order of the day (thanks, Kardashians!), but now it’s all about the highlight. As a result, there are a million different products available to help you get your strobe on, but the three most popular forms are liquid, cream and powder highlighters. If you own one of them, do you need the others? Makeup artist Tamryn Jefferies has the answer.

Liquid

Tamryn believes liquid highlighter is pretty versatile. You can dot it on and blend using your fingers to bring out the high points of your face – places like your brow bones, cheekbones, the bridge of your nose. Alternatively, you can mix it up with your foundation to convert its finish from matte to illuminating. “If you’re cool-toned, pick something pink or silvery-coloured. If you have warmer or dark skin, lean towards peach or gold,” she says.

Powder

Powder highlighters are ideal for creating an all-over glow but in a targeted area. “If you wanted a subtle cheek highlight, you could swipe it on using a small fluffy brush to create a sideways V-shape that runs from your temple to the top of your cheek,” Tamryn suggests. The best powder highlighters will feel buttery and be highly pigmented so you can build to your required intensity.

Cream

“Cream highlighters are typically more long-wearing than powders and usually come in a stick or pencil form,” Tamryn explains. “The latter is ideal if you’re looking for a more precise, focused highlight, like above your cupid’s bow or in the corner of your eyes. Stroke it on wherever you want it and then use your fingers or a sponge to blend it out.”
