Lockdown locks: It's time to give your hair a break

15 April 2020 | By Anna-Bet Stemmet

Getting a little concerned about the state of your hair while you’re isolating at home? To keep you motivated and looking your best while we’re on lockdown in South Africa, we thought we’d share some advice on keeping things natural on the haircare front.

Runé Louw, owner and head stylist at HT Hair Design in Malmesbury, has the following insider tips on caring for your tresses the no-fuss way while we all stay at home to protect the most vulnerable members of our community.

Pack away the heat-styling tools

“The simplest thing you can do when you want to give your hair a break is to pack away your heat-styling tools,” recommends Runé. “Challenge yourself to steer clear of your hairdryer, curling iron and flat iron for at least a week and get ready to marvel at the results. Not too sure how to manage a Facetime-friendly hairdo without the heat? Try a Brigitte Bardot updo or one of these other pretty no-heat styles.”

Take a breather between washes

“It may seem a little strange at first, but it’s actually a great idea to skip a wash every now and again. Most hairstylists actually recommend that you only shampoo and condition your hair twice a week, so you don’t run the risk of stripping away the natural oils that keep your hair sleek and shiny. While you’re at it, give sun-drying your hair a try. Put on some sunscreen, grab your sunglasses and a magazine, get comfortable on the balcony or lawn and enjoy a nice dose of Vitamin D while you let your hair do its thing,” suggests Runé.

Been tempted by co-wash or sulphate-free shampoos? Now is a great time to get your hair used to the change, and decide if it works for you.

The perfect time to treat

Never feel like you have enough time for a leave-in hair mask? Now is the perfect time to treat your locks to some serious lockdown TLC. Whether it's a leave-in conditioner while you prep lunch or get some work done, or an intensive overnight treatment - the combination of no heat tools and a few nourishing treatments will have you swishing your shiny strands by the time you leave home again.
