Oil or nothing: Let’s talk about facial oils

08 November 2019 | Helen Clemson

There’s certainly a buzz about the power of facial treatment oils right now. But, are they all hype and no results? We find out.

“The benefits of oils in skin care are numerous,” explains aesthetic medical practitioner Dr Alek Nikolic, “but, these benefits depend on the type of oil and its general properties.” he adds.

“Most naturally-derived oils contain vitamin E, fatty acids, and antioxidants; ingredient properties that will help with dry-textured skin, preparing and maintaining the skin barrier, protecting the skin against free radical environmental damage and reducing skin inflammation -  particularly valuable to those with sensitive skin types.”

An oil for every skin concern

If aging is your main concern, then Dr Nikolic recommends reaching for oil-rich products laced with Vitamin C and A, as these will help stimulate collagen, improve fine lines and wrinkles, reduce sebum production, lighten pigmentation and even brighten the skin.

Avocado oil is also high on his list as, “It’s typically high in vitamin E and fatty acids that help protect and repair the outer skin barrier. Avocado oil is also considered a rich emollient so will benefit those with dry textured skin,” says Dr Nikolic. Jojoba oil is also well-loved, as, “It’s been found to contain minerals like zinc and copper and these help with collagen stimulation. It also contains vitamins B - to help with repairing the skin barrier and hydration - and vitamin E, which acts as an antioxidant,” he adds.

It’s official: Oils are here to stay

If you’re loving the sound of what facial oils can do for your skin, know that what’s available now is just the tip of the product iceberg. Dr Nikolic feels that this type of at-home treatment is here to stay as there “will always be a certain proportion of consumers that prefer only naturally-derived ingredients,” he explains. “Oils derived from plants such as lavender or from fruit such as avocado will always appeal to these consumers,” says Dr Nikolic. “Also, I feel that even cosmeceutical-grade products will start to add more and more oils to their formulations to improve effect and feel of application.” Bonus!

Proceed with caution if you have sensitive skin

Before you stock up on an oil for every skin issue, or a superb multi-purpose product, know this: if you suffer from sensitive skin, perhaps they aren’t your perfect match. “Oils with natural fragrances can sensitise skin making it worse or cause reactions,” explains Dr Nikolic. And while ingredients like popular tea tree oil can be a real winner for blemish control - “It’s been shown to benefit acne skin and blemishes due to its antiseptic properties,” he says - tea tree can be sensitising and irritating.
