Our favourite body moisturisers for winter
We chatted to beauty and lifestyle blogger, Tanya Kovarsky for some advice on how to make sure your skin doesn’t take a hit when the cold weather strikes.
There’s a lot to love about winter – hot chocolate, comfort food and evenings in front of the fire. However, the cold, windy and wet weather can wreak havoc on your skin, with many of us developing dryness and flakiness during the colder months. But, all is not lost – here are a few deeply hydrating body moisturisers to help soothe your skin this winter.
Understand what your skin needs
According to Tanya, choosing a good body moisturiser starts with understanding that the “one size fits all” rule doesn’t apply to skin. First, determine the condition of your skin – “is the dryness related to seasonal change or do you suffer from eczema? If it’s the latter, you may want to go for something without fragrance – something that’s going to be ultra-moisturising and super gentle.”
Choose the right texture for your lifestyle
Then, as Tanya suggests, choose a texture that meets the needs of your skin – body butters, lotions and oils – there are a number of varieties to choose from. If you can, try it before you buy it, and give it time to settle on your skin to ensure that you’re not allergic to any of the ingredients.
Ingredients to keep an eye out for
“Look out for ceramides, essential fatty acids, vitamin-E, glycerine, urea and hyaluronic acid. In winter, I keep an eye out for emollients for an extra moisture boost,” advised Tanya.
Moisturising Tip: Tanya suggests that in addition to investing in a good body moisturiser, you should also exfoliate regularly to get rid of dead skin cells. Also, immediately after a bath or shower, pat your skin dry rather than rubbing it, to ensure that a thin layer of moisture remains on the surface of the skin. Then, lock in that moisture with a good moisturiser.
