Should you switch to a steam straightener?

12 March 2020 | By Leigh van den Berg

Move over flat irons, there’s a hot new styling tool in town: the BaByliss Ultra Sonic steam straightener.

Thanks to its innovative micro steam ultrasonic system the BaByliss Ultra Sonic Steam Straightener can tame even the curliest, coarsest tresses while leaving them smoother, shinier and more hydrated than before. Also, because its plates are curved, you can use it to straighten or curl - it's a win-win in our books.

What makes steam straighteners different?

Steam straighteners work similarly to the regular kind. You clamp a section of dry hair in between the plates before gently running it down the length. However, while a regular straightener’s plates heat up, a steam styler delivers a misting of hydrating steam that can straighten – or curl – your tresses.

“Steaming is one of the best things you can do to pamper your hair, as the heat aids in hydrating dry hair,” says award-winning hairstylist Charlotte Mensah. “The moist heat also encourages blood flow to circulate and helps to repair damaged hair”, she adds.

What’s in the box?

When you open up the BaByliss steam straightener’s box you’ll find a stylish-looking black travel pouch, two heat-resistant silicone finger protectors and a plastic pipette. The silicone finger protectors can be placed on the ends of the styler so you can rotate the barrel with your hands.

As for the pipette, that’s to help you fill-up the styler. Much like a clothes iron, the styler features a little water tank that’s very easy to fill thanks to the pipette. Even those with very thick hair or lots of it will find a full tank will let them style a full head of hair without the need for a top-up.

Style and protect

While a steam straightener is less damaging to hair than most flat irons, it still exposes your delicate strands to high temperatures. This is why it’s important to always use a heat defence product. However, unlike regular straighteners, a steam straightener doesn’t have the potential to develop a “hot spot” – an area that reaches incredibly high, uncontrolled temperature.

Don't take our word for it

It seems as though you love it just as much as we do - according to the reviews you've already left on the product page, here:

"Purchased this today and VERY happy with the results! I have coarse, thick, chemically treated hair and this straightener made my hair silky-smooth and soft! Was also surprised how long the water dispenser for the steam lasts...did all my hair...and the water level was only half when I finished."

"Babyliss Steam Straightener is the best in the game. It really does protect your hair and seals in the moisture!. If you want to keep your long hair healthy and growing then I highly recommend this."
