Sluggish hair growth - Here are 3 guy-friendly lunch ideas to get things going

14 November 2019 | By Anna-Bet Stemmet

There seems to be this unspoken rule that guys are not allowed to gripe about their hair (well, not out loud at least). As with all gender-related ‘laws’, this one is utter nonsense.

Of course guys care about their hair – it’s the outfit you wear every day, and it’s right there by your face. So what’s a grooming-conscious bloke to do if hair growth seems to be on a downwards trajectory?

We recently caught up with Deidré Geldenhuys, owner and head stylist at Piatra's Hair Design in Worcester, Western Cape, to find out which vitamins are essential for healthy hair. According to her, you’re always going to get out what you put in.

“I tell my clients that good hair growth starts from the inside out,” says Deidré. “If you really want your tresses to flourish, I'd start by upping levels of Biotin, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin D and Vitamin E by adding foods to my diet that are naturally rich in these micronutrients. Oh, and cod liver oil, of course – the taste is not great (to say the least), but you won’t believe what it does for your hair.”

Of course, there is always the option of taking these vitamins it in supplement form as well, but why not play around with your diet a little to see if it makes a difference? After all, we can all do with a bit of a shake-up in our packed-lunch repertoire from time to time.

Here are a few guy-friendly lunch ideas that are crammed full of hair-growth-boosting goodness:

The Big Green Smoothie

If you normally grab lunch on the run between meetings, a smoothie can be a life saver. Try the following recipe that’s filled with hair health vitamins:

•    2 cups baby spinach
•    1 banana (frozen for extra creaminess)
•    1 tablespoon flax seeds
•    1 tablespoon raw cacao powder
•    1 tablespoon almond butter
•    250 ml almond milk
•    100 ml filtered water

Blitz together in a high-powered blender and serve! It’s creamy, chocolate-y and delicious – you won’t even notice the spinach at all, so up the leafy component if you want.

The Loaded Salad

Build yourself an enormous salad by adding together some leafy greens, a protein, a complex carb, a healthy fat, plenty of colourful vegetables and a sprinkling of toasted seeds. For instance, you could go with:
•    Kale, shredded chicken, cubed sweet potato, avocado, carrot, yellow peppers and pumpkin seeds, OR
•    Baby spinach, hummus, quinoa, olives, tomato, cucumber and toasted linseeds.

The Poor Boy’s Poké Bowl

Oily fish is hugely beneficial to the hair, so if you’re going to pick up a take-out lunch, a poké bowl with tuna or salmon is a great option. However, you can also cheat a little and build your own version to take along to work. Simply layer some greens (spinach, kale, etc.) with brown rice, add some oily fish like middle-cut mackerel or sardines to the side, and fill the rest of your bakkie with an array of colourful, raw vegetables. Add a drizzle of olive oil and lemon juice when you’re ready to chow, and tuck in!
There you have it – three delicious, nutritious lunches that will keep you feeling full and energised throughout the afternoon, and give you hair a growth boost to boot.
