The proper way to put on fragrance (yes, there are methods!)

12 November 2019 | By Anna-Bet Stemmet

Want to get the most out of your scent? Here’s a quick look at how you should be putting on your fragrance if you want to achieve the best results possible.

How do you put on your perfume in the morning? Do you go old school (one spritz on the neck, one on the pulse and then rub the pulses together), or have you adopted the “Jonathan method” as seen on Queer Eye (i.e. spray, delay and walk away)? Did you even realise that this is something you should be thinking about? So many questions!

We like to call in an expert opinion when we run into one of these mind-bogglers, so we got in touch with local perfumer Tammy Frazer, founder of Frazer Parfum – a bespoke perfumery in Cape Town that produces natural and organic fragrances for the home, body and mind. Here’s what she had to say about the proper way to put on a fragrance.

Ditch the rulebook

“It's amazing how things are changing in the fragrance industry at the moment. It almost seems like there are no cut and dried rules anymore! In the past, it was all about spraying perfume and fragrances straight onto your skin, ideally on the pulse points where the heat of your body would react with the scent to diffuse it.

We also use to say you shouldn’t 'crush' the fragrance, so don't rub your pulses together,” explains Tammy. “However, these days the rules are a lot less restrictive – you can choose your application method and location according to your own needs from one day to the next.”

Switch (and spritz!) it up

Here are a few interesting methods Tammy recommends trying:

●    Concerned that a fragrance may stain your clothing? Apply it to your hair!
●    Heading out into the sun for the day and worried that it may react with fragrance on your skin? Apply your perfume to your clothing instead.
●    Want to know what a perfume would smell like after you’ve worn it for a while when you’re trying it out in the store? Apply the fragrance to your hands, rub your hands together and then rub it onto the skin of your arms, starting at the elbow, all the way down to your wrists.
