Curls are a total vibe right now. We’re seeing them all over the red carpet, on celebs like Alicia Keys and Yara Shahidi. And there’s so much to love about them – they’re bouncy, they’re fun and they add instant volume to your locks – but, they do need a little extra attention and care. Here are three tips to help you get the most from your curls.

Be a pro pineapple

If you’ve got your eye on pop culture, you’ll have heard of the pineapple hair trend. For curly-haired girls, it’s the ultimate solution to preventing flattened frizz while you sleep. To do it, simply scrunch leave-in conditioner into your hair, then bend forward and gather your hair together on top of your head. Then, slip a fabric scrunchie around the base of your ponytail and let go. Your curls will fall to either side of the scrunchie, resembling a pineapple. Sleeping with this hairstyle will prevent your hair from knotting while you sleep.

Top tip: The pineapple trend will help to prevent tangling. But, remember – allow your hair to air dry before you sleep. If you tie your hair up on top of your head when it’s wet, it will start drying and set in that exact style and may not look great the next day.

Plop your mop

There are people who swear by this trend and with all the gorgeous curls we’ve seen, we believe them. We’re talking about the plopping trend. To do it:

•    After shampooing, apply a leave-in conditioner to damp hair
•    Detangle with a wide-toothed comb
•    Lay a cotton t-shirt on a flat surface, arm section furthest from you
•    Flip your head upside down and lower your curls onto the centre of the t-shirt
•    Take the two bottom edges of the t-shirt and bring them together at the nape of your neck
•    Fold the top of the t-shirt downwards and over the back of your head
•    Then stand up and bring the two arm sections around the front of your head and tie a knot
•    Allow your hair to dry for at least 30 minutes or overnight for best results
•    And voilà! Curly curls everywhere!

Plopping helps to increase volume because the root of the hair is directed away from the scalp to start the drying process. Want to take your curls to the next level? Use a strainer instead of a diffuser!

Detangle your tresses

Tangles are a curly-haired girl’s worst enemy. Once the knots are in, they’re a nightmare to get out. That’s why using the correct detangler is key. Investing in a good one will prevent unnecessary breakage and get your curls looking fresh and buoyant.

The professionals recommend using a soft detangling brush on wet hair, which can be used in the shower after you apply conditioner. Always start by detangling from the ends and work your way up. Big combs can work on dry hair to loosen up curls - but, it all depends on your hair type, so ask your stylist’s advice if you’re not 100% sure which one to use.
