Why fruity fragrances are glowing up this season

12 November 2019 | By Helen Clemson

Fruity scents have had a makeover, and they’re not just for teenage girls anymore. Read on for some of our favourite tutti-frutti fragrances suitable for grown-ups.

Think scents packed with juicy fruit are all fun but no substance? Ditch the tired notion that fruity fragrances are the domain of teens – or just make scents sickly sweet – and try on these sophisticated newbies.

Cheerful citrus

From zingy grapefruit to the fresh strains of Sicilian lemon, citrus-heavy scents (look for it in the top and heart notes) are crisp, easy to wear and can make you feel happier. In a report by huffpost.com, the energising properties of citrus are explained like this: “Scents like lemon and orange are not only well-known for their Vitamin C properties, but simply sniffing the fruit can help boost energy and alertness.” Now imagine a scent like Clinique Happy for Men EDT wafting under your nose all day and think how much better you’ll feel!

Bring on the berries

Tangy red fruit notes do the opposite of what a bowl of sweet strawberries does for your taste buds; they can actually add a wonderfully aromatic tartness to a scent. And they also put us in a peaceful state of mind. “We’re drawn back to nature right now, and these ingredients (such as blackcurrant and rhubarb) allow us to escape back to an idyllic place,” says fine fragrance perfumer, Nathalie Benareau of Symrise in an interview with harpersbazaar.com. Find red berries in Hollister Festival Vibes For Her EDP.

Perfectly pear-ed

Pear is a fragrance note that has been having a moment for a few years now – and with good reason! “It’s crisp yet juicy, clean yet semi-sweet, green and somehow almost ‘crunchy’. It can be combined in many different ways: pear is surprisingly complex and versatile,” writes Josephine Fairley, co-founder of the Perfume Society, on telegraph.co.uk. “But to me there’s always a clean, fresh edge to a pear scent – so think of these as a delicious alternative to getting out the ironing board.” We suggest you try Karl Lagerfeld Fleur De Pecher EDP on for size.

Go green

Fragrances laden with green notes (traditionally smelling of cut grass or leaves) play into our heightened mindfulness of the environment. “There’s a greater awareness in nature, and the result is an unconscious desire for fragrances that reflect these qualities,” says Frank Voelkl, senior perfumer for Firmenich, to harpersbazaar.com. Before you think green notes don’t include fruits, look for fragrances with crisp, clean green apple that give a scent a delicious tang like Adidas Champions League EDT.
