Autumn skin shock: why your summer routine suddenly stops working
A dermatologist explains why seasonal ‘skin shock’ happens – and how to adjust your routine to protect your skin barrier.
When March arrives, many people notice a sudden shift in their skin. The lightweight products that worked perfectly in summer can start to sting, dry out the skin or trigger unexpected breakouts. According to Dr Cebi Sibisi, a dermatologist based in Durban, this reaction is not random. Here is what is really happening to your skin and how to adjust your routine for autumn.
Why skin reacts at the start of autumn
Summer skincare often focuses on oil control, sun protection, and lighter textures. As the weather cools and humidity drops, these same products can feel harsh or insufficient. “As temperatures drop and humidity decreases in autumn, the skin loses moisture more easily. This makes previously effective products feel too harsh or not hydrating enough, leading to dryness, sensitivity and breakouts,” says Dr Sibisi.
How the barrier is compromised
One of the main reasons skin feels tight and uncomfortable in autumn is transepidermal water loss, or TEWL, which is water evaporating from the skin. “In autumn, lower humidity increases TEWL, causing tightness, dryness and sensitivity. A compromised barrier allows even more water loss,” explains Dr Sibisi.
This loss of moisture can also trigger excess oil production, as dehydrated skin tries to compensate. “It may seem contradictory, but dehydration and breakouts often appear at the same time,” she says. Combined with a weakened skin barrier and slower cell turnover, this can clog pores, leaving skin both dry on the surface and prone to breakouts. Understanding this cycle is key: treating autumn breakouts with harsher, drying products often worsens barrier disruption rather than solving the problem.
Repair and reassess
Autumn is the season to prioritise hydration and barrier support. Instead of focusing solely on oil control, shift your attention to replenishing what the skin is losing. Look for ceramides to restore the lipid barrier, hyaluronic acid and glycerin to draw in moisture, and niacinamide to strengthen the barrier and reduce inflammation. Fatty acids and cholesterol support long-term repair. Together, these ingredients help reduce transepidermal water loss and improve overall resilience.
At the same time, it may be necessary to rethink your actives. As cooler, drier air weakens the barrier, ingredients that once controlled oil or exfoliated effectively can start to irritate. Dr Sibisi recommends reducing frequent AHAs and BHAs, spacing out high-strength retinoids, and avoiding foaming or stripping cleansers. Alcohol-based toners and products can also increase dryness and sensitivity during this time. By combining barrier-replenishing ingredients with a lighter, gentler approach to actives, you can support your skin as it adapts to the seasonal change.
How to transition your skin into autumn
Autumn skin shock is common, but it can be managed. Dr Cebi recommends a few simple adjustments to keep your skin balanced, healthy and resilient as the seasons change.
1. Layer hydration
Apply a hydrating serum under your moisturiser to lock in moisture and keep skin soft throughout the day.
2. Upgrade your moisturiser
Move from lightweight gels to richer creams. Thicker textures help seal in hydration and support the barrier as the air grows drier.
3. Cleanse gently
Choose non-foaming, gentle cleansers that remove impurities without stripping natural oils. Over-cleansing can worsen dryness and sensitivity.
4. Exfoliate less often
Limit exfoliation to once or twice a week. Overdoing acids or scrubs in autumn can weaken the skin barrier and increase water loss.
5. Don’t skip SPF
UV damage continues even in cooler months. Daily sun protection helps prevent long-term damage and premature ageing.
6. Listen to your skin
Adjust your routine gradually. Introduce changes one at a time and observe how your skin responds. Patience is key to avoiding irritation and maintaining comfort.
