‘Beauty burnout’ is real (and it might be harming your skin)

Skincare has become increasingly complicated. Multi-step routines, trending ingredients and constant product launches can make it feel like you always need to add something new. For many, this has led to what is now known as beauty burnout. Instead of feeling relaxing or enjoyable, skincare becomes another task on an already long to-do list. The good news is that simplifying your routine can often restore both your skin barrier and your motivation.

What is ‘beauty burnout’?

Beauty burnout happens when skincare routines become too complicated, time-consuming or product-heavy. It often develops gradually as people add new products or steps in search of faster or better results.

Social media trends can worsen this cycle. With so many new products and routines appearing constantly, many people feel pressure to keep up. As Dr Shireen Furtado, a senior consultant in medical and cosmetic dermatology, explains, beauty burnout occurs when people feel “tired, stressed, or overwhelmed by their beauty and skincare routines.”

How to spot it

Your skin usually shows the first signs that your routine is doing too much. Persistent redness, stinging when applying moisturiser, flaking, tightness or breakouts that feel different from your usual pattern can all signal that your skin is overwhelmed.

Skin may also appear shiny but dehydrated, or products that once worked well suddenly seem ineffective. Dermatologists suggest these changes often point to a compromised skin barrier, which means the skin struggles to retain moisture and becomes more reactive to everyday products.

How to create a simpler routine

A minimalist routine focuses on a few reliable steps that support skin health without overwhelming it. Dr Shireen Furtado recommends focusing on “basic care like cleansing, moisturising and sun protection – instead of following every trend,” which allows skin to recover and reduces stress around daily routines.

1. Cleanse gently

Start with a gentle cleanser that removes dirt, sweat and sunscreen without stripping the skin of its natural oils. Hydrating formulas with ingredients such as glycerin or ceramides help maintain the skin barrier while keeping skin comfortable and balanced.

2. Target if needed

If you want to address a specific concern such as dullness, dehydration or uneven tone, a single targeted serum can help. Lightweight formulas with ingredients like vitamin C or hyaluronic acid boost hydration and radiance without layering too many actives.

3. Moisturise consistently

A good moisturiser replenishes hydration and strengthens the skin barrier. Ingredients such as ceramides, fatty acids and hyaluronic acid help prevent moisture loss and keep skin soft and resilient, even for oily or combination types.

4. Protect with sunscreen

Daily sun protection is essential. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every morning to shield skin from UV damage, which can contribute to premature ageing, pigmentation and overall stress on the skin.

Beauty Tip: Once your basic routine feels comfortable, you can add occasional extras such as gentle exfoliation and face masks once or twice a week if your skin tolerates it. The goal is consistency rather than complexity, allowing your skin to recover and function at its best.
