Beauty on a Budget
Tips and tricks to help you look fabulous without breaking the bank
For beauty lovers, there’s nothing more satisfying than testing out the latest glow-giving serum, hydrating eye cream or lash-enhancing mascara. However, as fun as it can be to splurge on products, it can cause a major dent in your wallet.
The truth is, looking your prettiest doesn’t have to cost a pretty penny. Making smart shopping choices and being more creative can curb your spending and give your bank account a much-needed boost. From colouring your hair at home to making a DIY face scrub, these tips and tricks will help you minimise spending and maximise your beauty routine.
Store products in the fridge
As more beauty companies are starting to emphasise the importance of reducing the number of preservatives and chemicals in skincare, products will also have a shorter shelf life.
A simple trick to help maintain product freshness is to store it in the fridge. This is especially useful for face masks and water-based products. By doing this, you reduce exposure to humidity and heat, which tend to encourage bacterial growth in products with less or no preservatives.
Create your own tinted moisturiser
When you find a foundation that suits your skin type and skin tone, it’s worth purchasing it. However, on days when you don’t need as much coverage, use less by mixing your foundation with a drop of moisturiser or serum. You’ll have a tinted moisturiser that gives you hydrating benefits as well as light coverage – and your bottle of foundation will last longer too.
Prolong your shampoo
Over washing can cause damage to hair, but if you’re someone who likes to wash their hair more frequently, then a good rule of thumb is to leave at least two to three days between washes. Not only does this save on shampoo, but it also keeps your hair healthier. Need to refresh in between sessions? Pat baby powder on your roots to absorb any oil.
Colour your hair at home
The cost of getting your hair coloured professionally every four to six weeks can add up quickly. Rather than heading to the salon, consider doing your hair in the comfort of your own home. With plenty of at-home hair colouring kits on the shelves achieving envy-worthy colour without the salon price tag is now easier (and cheaper) than ever.
Repurpose products
If you bought a product that doesn’t seem to work well for you, don’t throw it away. Instead, repurpose it. A face cream that doesn’t seem to agree with your skin type will work well as a cuticle moisturiser while a body wash or bubble bath with a fragrance you’re not fond of could be used as a hand wash in your guest bathroom. And never throw out broken bronzers. Mix a little moisturiser with them, and you’ve got yourself a custom bronzing lotion.
Choose multi-tasking products
One of the simplest ways to save money, vanity space and time is to invest in multi-purpose products. Fortunately, this has become quite a trend with more and more beauty houses launching products that can tackle more than one problem, such as creamy makeup sticks or a palette that can be used on your lips, cheeks and eyes, serum-foundations that offer coverage and skincare benefits, or beauty balms that tame your eyebrows.
