How lack of sleep affects your skin

29 June 2022 | By Jennifer Campbell

With busy schedules and endless to-do lists, it’s easy to skimp on sleep. But did you know that if you don’t get enough rest every night, your skin could be paying the price?

As it turns out, ‘beauty sleep’ is a real thing — sleep deprivation can lead to premature ageing and rob the skin of its opportunity to properly regenerate. When you sleep, the skin works to restore itself by getting rid of and replacing dead cells.

Without enough sleep, this process is disrupted, plus the skin becomes more vulnerable to damage caused by free-radicals. In the long-term, this can lead to a range of issues, including the development of lines and wrinkles, a loss of elasticity, and puffy and dark skin around the eyes. So, what can you do to resolve these problems? And how can you ensure a better night’s sleep?

Address skincare issues

Problems like dehydration, redness and breakouts are some of the most common side-effects of sleep deprivation. Vel Naidoo, a beauty therapist based in Ballito, KwaZulu Natal, says that dehydrated skin should be addressed as soon as possible — she recommends a hydrating facial, a nourishing serum or a face mask. Redness, she says, is usually a sign of sensitive skin, and is something that should be treated with products especially formulated for this skin type.

When it comes to breakouts, it’s important to understand that the correct treatment and care will go a long way towards improving the overall condition of the skin. “Skincare products formulated for acne or oily skin are highly beneficial,” says Vel. “Acne-prone skin has excessive oil, which needs be balanced out with water, so hydration is an ideal starting point. And using a clean pillow slip will do you well, as you spend eight hours with your face on it.”

If you’ve noticed dark circles under your eyes, Vel recommends that you drink plenty of water and try to get more sleep in order to lighten the skin.

Establish a night time routine

When your sleep cycle is disrupted, the skin becomes imbalanced, which in turn affects the pH levels and dehydrates the skin, stripping it of its healthy glow. If you struggle to get enough good-quality sleep, it’s advisable that you prioritise your bedtime routine. Give yourself plenty of time to relax, and try to avoid coffee and alcohol, both of which can further dehydrate the skin, leaving it looking red and puffy.

Vel recommends sleeping on cotton linens, as these tend to be best for the skin, and making sure that your sheets are cleaned on a regular basis. She also suggests establishing a good skincare routine before bedtime every night. “Apply serums and face masks as our skin rejuvenates at night and it’s the best time to use these kinds of products,” she says.
