Looking for nail designs to match the sunshine-filled days and bright outfits ahead? Unlike getting a major haircut or trying out a slew of skincare products, changing up your nails is a fun and easy way to play with colours, textures, designs, and shapes. While bold patterns and classic french nails are always a winner, this summer is all about ombré nails.

What are ombré nails?

Much like ombré hair, ombré nails involve creating a seamless gradient between two – or sometimes more – colours on each finger.

The best part about ombré nails is that you can customise the result. Use clear and white polish, or a monotone colour palette for a more minimalist approach and for those looking for something extra, you could try a different ombré shade on each finger. No matter what colours or designs you choose, you'll be able to keep switching them up to wear ombré nails all year round.

How to get the look

It's easy to DIY at home if you don't want to head to the salon. For the most basic take on ombré nails you will need the following:

• Basecoat

• Topcoat

• Nail polish remover

• Three shades of the same colour family (light to dark)

• Wedge makeup sponge

• Scissors

Step-By -Step Guide

• Cut and customise your makeup wedge.

• Apply a base coat to your nails and wait until it’s fully dry.

• Brush the three colours in straight lines on the wedge makeup sponge. To create a gradient on the sponge, overlap each colour slightly, and work from lightest to darkest to avoid blending the colours. Then carefully press the sponge on your nail like a stamp and repeat for each finger.

• Use a cotton bud and nail polish remover to remove any polish that got onto the skin around your nails.

• Lastly apply a topcoat to your nails immediately after sponging since it will not only help prevent chips but help enhance the fade.
