How to Go Grey in Style
We sought advice from the barbers at Sorbet Man to guide you through going grey.
Expressions lines, a few crow’s feet around the eyes, and some errant grey hair. It’s nothing to freak out about – they’re signs of living, and maturing. And going grey is an inevitable part of life – think of it as a journey. And embrace it! Think Idris Alba and Ben Affleck – their silver fox look is a mark of distinction. (And let's not forget the fortune of actually having hair that can go grey in the first place.) To sport the silver fox era with finesse, we chatted to Sorbet Man’s master barbers, Deborah Adebayo and Fatima Solanke. Here’s what they had to say.
Matters of going grey
Research has shown grey hair can start as early as in your twenties, but it's more common to see it in your thirties and beyond. “It's all about genetics and the natural loss of pigmentation as we age,” explains Fatima. Embrace your grey era, says Deborah, and do not pluck grey hairs when you notice them. “This can cause damage to the follicles and may hinder regrowth.”
Hairstyles to inspire your new look
When it comes to hairstyles, there are no fixed rules, says Fatima. She recommends showing your barber a style you like with a picture reference. It's also important to consider your hair texture and your desired level of maintenance. “Consult with your barber to find a style that complements your head shape, your facial features, and the charm of your silver strands,” she adds.
Nourish your hair with the right shampoo
If you’ve ever bleached your hair, you'll understand the struggle of brittle hair. Basically, grey hair can have the same effect. “It’s wise to invest in a purple or silver shampoo to remove brassy tones while moisturising and conditioning the hair,” says Deborah. “It won't tint or stain your hair or scalp, it just gets rid of that yellow tinge."
Sometimes, grey hair may stand out due to dryness, says Deborah. “Trim those unruly strands to keep them in line with the rest of your hair to maintain a polished appearance”.

Get the best hair styling products “Using heavy or greasy styling products can make grey hair look dull,” explains Deborah. She recommends using a clear pomade or styling cream. These products are enriched with conditioning oils that provide shine and do not leave any residue. It will enhance the appearance of your grey hair and maintain a fresh look.

Take care of your grey beard
As we age, our beards tend to become coarser and absorb more oil. “Using a beard shampoo, followed by a beard oil, is essential to keep a grey beard in prime condition,” says Deborah. Switching to a softer beard brush will also benefit your delicate whiskers. “Additionally, if your beard is fully grey, using purple shampoo can help neutralise any brassy tones.”
