Nail shapes 101
Square, almond, stiletto… How do you choose the right nail shape? A Sorbet expert shares her top tips.
Choosing the perfect nail shape can sometimes feel just as challenging as selecting the right nail colour. To help guide you in finding your best shape, we reached out to Luxolo Mangele, a nail expert at Sorbet Salon Montclare in Cape Town. Whether you're looking for something classic or daring, Luxolo breaks down the best nail shapes, the type of hands they suit, and a few handy tips to guide your decision-making.
How to decide which nail shape to choose
Before you pick your shape, Luxolo suggests keeping a few key factors in mind:
Length
● Long fingers: If you have long fingers, go for a shorter nail shape. This will balance out the proportions and avoid making your fingers appear excessively long.
● Short fingers: Opt for round, oval or almond shapes if you have short fingers. This will create the illusion of longer fingers and avoid making your hands look stubby.
Nail bed width
● Wide nail beds: Oval, almond, or squoval (a square shape nail with rounded corners) shapes can help elongate and slim down the appearance of wide nail beds.
● Narrow nail beds: Square, stiletto, or coffin nails (where very long nails are noticeably tapered) can add width and balance to narrow nail beds.
Shape of hands:
● Short, wide hands: Almond or oval shapes can help elongate the fingers and create a more balanced look.
● Long, slim hands: Coffin or stiletto shapes can accentuate the length and slimness of the hands.
Skin type:
● Dry skin: For dry skin, round shapes are recommended. They are less prone to splitting at the edges, which can happen with dry nail beds.
● Oily hands: Square-shaped nails offer more resistance and durability, which helps to prevent breakage.
TOP TIP: Consider how much you use your hands daily. If you’re someone who uses their hands frequently, go for a wide shape. This will add stability and strength to your nails, helping them withstand pressure.
Nail shape to try
Round nails
What: Round nails are gently curved at the tip, mimicking the natural shape of your fingertips. They offer a low-maintenance, classic style that is clean and simple.
Best suited to…: Round nails are great for those with shorter fingers as they help elongate the fingers, making them appear slender. They’re also ideal for square or wide nail beds, as they create a slimmer look.
Oval nails
What: Oval nails feature a rounded tip with a soft taper. This shape provides a graceful, elongated appearance.
Best suited to…: Oval nails are perfect for those with longer fingers or short/wide nail beds. They give the illusion of longer, more slender fingers, and create a soft, elegant look.
Almond nails
What: Almond-shaped nails are tapered to a soft point, resembling the shape of an almond. They offer a mix of elegance and edge.
Best suited to…: Almond nails suit most hand types, but they are especially flattering for those with wide nail beds. This shape elongates fingers and creates a refined but bold statement.
Coffin nails
What: Coffin nails, also called ballerina nails, are long nails with a squared-off tip and tapered sides, creating a sleek, dramatic effect.
Best suited to…: Coffin nails work well for those who like a bold, edgy look. They are best suited for longer fingers and require strong nails to support the length. This shape exudes a sophisticated and fashion-forward vibe.
Square nails
What It Is: Square nails are straight-filed on the sides with a straight, square tip. This shape provides a clean, geometric appearance.
Best suited to…: Square nails are ideal for those with long, narrow nail beds, especially if you prefer a shorter length. They are structured and bold, offering a sharp, modern appearance.
Stiletto nails
What: Stiletto nails are long and dramatic, tapered to a sharp point. This striking look mimics the shape of a stiletto heel, making a bold fashion statement.
Best suited to…: Perfect for those who love a high-fashion, daring look, stiletto nails work well on short fingers. They require patience and care to maintain. They are also quite prone to breakage, so they demand strong nails.
Squoval nails
What: Squoval nails combine the best of both worlds - square and oval - by offering straight edges with softly rounded corners.
Best suited to…: This universally flattering shape is ideal for those who want a practical yet stylish look. It provides a balance between the softness of round nails and the boldness of square nails, making it suitable for most nail types.
