New season, new scent: fragrance notes to look for in autumn/winter

According to Karla Woolley, Head of Buying at The Perfume Shop, there is a clear shift happening in fragrance preferences as the year moves into the cooler months. "This winter, customers are really leaning into those cosy, comfort-blanket notes, the kind you spritz and instantly feel warmer," she explains, noting that gourmands, especially creamy vanilla, tonka bean and caramel, are once again dominating the seasonal scent landscape. 

The psychology of comfort scents

While summer fragrances often focus on freshness and citrus brightness, autumn and winter are all about warmth and emotional comfort. Scientists and fragrance experts suggest this shift is not just about smelling nice; it is about how scent influences mood. Warm notes like musk, vanilla and woods can trigger feelings of calm and even nostalgia by activating parts of the brain linked to memory and emotion. These smells often evoke cosy experiences, think a warm fire, soft blankets, hot sweet drinks, which makes them ideal for the darker, shorter days.

Warm musk and wood notes

Woody notes have long been a staple for cooler months, but this season, there is a twist. Rather than heavy, overpowering woods, the trend is toward smoother, more personal blends that sit close to the body. Woolley notes that sandalwood and amber provide a soft, enveloping warmth that lingers on the skin, giving autumn fragrances a cosy, wearable depth. This keeps the scent comforting without being overwhelming, making it ideal for both daytime and evening wear.

Musk also plays a key role in many autumn fragrances, adding an earthy, subtle warmth that deepens the overall aroma. Unlike sharper or brighter notes, musk feels close to the skin and comforting, enhancing the wood notes and anchoring them with a smooth, lingering richness that is perfect for cooler days and evenings.
