Post-workout skincare: how to cleanse, hydrate and protect your skin after exercise
Simple steps to keep your skin clear and healthy after every workout.
Exercise is one of the best things you can do for your body and mind. It boosts circulation, improves your mood, and reduces stress. But what about your skin? While sweat is part of your body’s natural cooling system, it can also mix with oil, dirt, and bacteria, leading to irritation and breakouts if not managed correctly. But with the right routine, your post-gym glow can last long after your workout.
The benefits of exercise for your skin
Exercise can be great for your skin when paired with the right routine. Increased circulation delivers oxygen and nutrients for a healthy glow, while lower stress levels reduce breakouts and calm inflammation. By cleansing, hydrating, and protecting your skin after each workout, you can enjoy the glow of exercise without the irritation.
Is it okay to work out in makeup?
This is a common question, especially for people heading to the gym straight from work. Cape Town-based dermatologist, Dr Barbara van der Westhuizen advises keeping it light: “It’s fine to exercise with some mild makeup on, but thick foundation and oily products can lead to occlusion [when heavy products block your skin and trap sweat and oil] and more breakouts.” Instead, she suggests opting for minimal coverage and a light fluid sunscreen.
Why post-workout skincare matters
Sweat can be both friend and foe. It helps regulate body temperature, but once it dries, it can irritate the skin and trap bacteria. “Always cleanse and cool down your skin after exercising,” says Dr van der Westhuizen. “If you’re pressed for time, a spritz of hypochlorous spray will decrease the bacterial count on your skin and tide you over until you get home and shower. And don’t forget to reapply sunscreen before heading out.”
Your post-workout skincare routine
Step 1: pat, don’t rub
Use a clean towel to gently blot sweat away during your workout. Avoid wiping or touching your face, which can transfer bacteria.
Step 2: cleanse
As soon as possible, wash your face with a mild cleanser. “Mild cleansers with salicylic acid are great to refresh the skin after a workout and help prevent breakouts,” says Dr van der Westhuizen. “If you have more sensitive skin, a gentle cream cleanser is best.”
Step 3: hydrate
After cleansing, apply a moisturising serum followed by a lightweight, non-comedogenic face cream to restore hydration and support your skin barrier.
Step 4: protect
Sunscreen is non-negotiable, whether it’s sunny, cloudy, or you’re heading home after an indoor workout. Dr van der Westhuizen advises opting for a lightweight, fluid formula that won’t clog pores or feel heavy on post-exercise skin.
Step 5: target trouble spots
If you’re prone to breakouts on your back or chest, look for a body wash with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Spot treatments can also help keep flare-ups under control.

Post-workout skincare mistakes to avoid
Dr van der Westhuizen notes that many people overdo it after a workout. “I would advise against harsh cleansers with physical scrubs or exfoliating particles, as this can damage your skin barrier and actually make you more prone to breakouts and flares.” Other common pitfalls include:
● Skipping cleansing: Letting sweat sit too long can allow bacteria to clog pores and cause breakouts.
● Reapplying makeup too soon: Always give your skin time to breathe before applying makeup
Quick skincare fixes at the gym
Pressed for time? Try these easy tips to refresh your skin after a workout:
● Cleansing Wipes: Keep gentle, alcohol-free wipes in your gym bag to clean your face quickly.
● Change Sweaty Clothes: Swap damp workout gear for clean clothes to prevent bacteria buildup.
Keep it simple, gentle, and consistent. As Dr van der Westhuizen sums up: “Best to exercise with minimal makeup, a light fluid sunscreen, and then cleanse and moisturise as soon as you are able to afterwards.” With this expert-approved routine, you can enjoy the glow of a great workout while keeping your skin calm, clear, and healthy.
