Winter often leaves our skin parched and begging for an extra layer of hydration, but in summer, the sun's warmth, more exposure to sunlight, and increased humidity mean our skin may respond differently. We need skincare that can help it adapt to the new season.

While there’s no need to make over your entire routine, a few adjustments can make a big difference in keeping our faces fresh and protected. From adding lighter lotions to upping your SPF game, keep scrolling for tips on how to prep your routine for sunnier days ahead.

Skincare

Foam party

In summer, our cleansers need to be able to remove sweat, oil, SPF, and waterproof makeup with ease. And while cleansing balms and cream cleansers do work, they’re not as thorough as foaming formulas. Switch to hydrating foam cleansers to counterbalance the oil flow that the warmer weather brings, and to avoid clogged sweat glands from heavy sunscreens.

Lighten up

Rich, emollient creams are a godsend in winter but in summer these thick formulas can feel too heavy on the skin. Lightweight or water-based formulas such as mists, gels, and lotions will not only feel more comfortable as the heat and humidity rise, but they provide the same skin-soothing ingredients, without adding extra oil and grease.

Gentle exfoliation

The most sought-after complexion for summer is radiant, dewy, and fresh-looking, and a mild exfoliating treatment (think glycolic and lactic acid) is essential in creating this perfect base. Apart from getting rid of the dry, dead skin left over from the harsh winter months, gentle exfoliation once or twice a week will also assist with product penetration and unblocking pores, amplifying the efficacy of the rest of your products leaving you with a glowing complexion.

Super C

Using products that are rich in antioxidants, such as vitamin C, is a great way of further protecting your skin during the summer. This powerful antioxidant can shield skin from the destructive work of free radicals (atoms responsible for breaking down collagen in the skin), as well as help brighten the skin and reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation caused by the sun.

Up your SPF game

We know that regular daily SPF application is non-negotiable throughout the year. However, in summer, with more prolonged exposure to the sun, you may want to up the strength of your usual sun protection. Use a sunscreen with a broad-spectrum cover of an SPF of 30 or higher for the best protection – and don't forget to reapply every few hours.

Makeup

Fresh foundation

It’s time to shelve your heavy, full-coverage foundation and add a more light-weight formula into your routine. Tinted moisturisers or BB creams with SPF are ideal for when the temperatures start to rise as these breathable formulas can even out your complexion and boost your skin’s glow without clogging pores or settling into fine lines.

Cream of the crop

Powder products don’t play well in summer as the heat causes them to crease and flake which affect the skin’s radiance. Instead, opt for cream textures that can sink into the skin and provide a radiant sheen whenever the light hits the face. Think creamy bronzers, blushes, multi-tasking lip and cheek sticks, and more.

Balmy days

To prevent sunburned lips, avoid wearing super shiny lip glosses that can reflect UV rays and lead to sun damage. Instead, choose a waxy balm with a hint of colour for a polished pout that’s well-moisturised. Look out for those formulas containing SPF too.

Waterproof wonder

Waterproof mascara is arguably one of the most essential summer staples if you want to avoid the dreaded racoon eye. While offering the same features as regular mascara - voluminous, lengthened lashes – it will also give you the reassurance that it won't run or streak, regardless of how much you sweat or even if you are planning on plunging into the pool or ocean.
