The at-home beauty treatment to try: Charcoal masks
Charcoal face masks and peels are becoming increasingly popular, and may just be what the doctor ordered for ridding your skin of impurities.
The Department of Health recommends that we should wash our cloth masks each time that we wear them. However, even good mask hygiene doesn’t prevent maskne, a form of acne caused by frequently keeping our faces covered.
Good skincare is crucial at this time, which means that you might be thinking of including something extra in your skincare routine. Many beauty pundits believe that charcoal-based products are great for giving your skin a deep clean.
“Known for its benefits in ridding the skin of impurities, charcoal as an ingredient in skincare means an opportunity to help balance oiliness as well as cleanse skin,” beauty journalist Helen Clemson explains. “It’s reported that for those suffering from acne, charcoal can even help lessen breakouts.”
According to the Founder and Medical Director of Renewal Institute Dr Maureen Allem, charcoal masks are great for the absorption of excess oil and for general exfoliation of the skin.
“Charcoal is suitable for all skin types. The only caution would be to those with very sensitive skins to avoid overuse. If you have sensitive skin you should not over-exfoliate, so keep this to a maximum of once a week,” Allem says.
