When it comes to makeup, our looks are only as good as the brushes we use. The same rule applies to hair. While we often shower praise on our trusty straighteners and curling wands, the true power of a good hairbrush - the unsung hero of hair styling and care - is often overlooked. Beyond simply detangling, using the right brush for your hair type can reduce breakage, prevent bad hair days, and give you the ultimate 'do (no curling wand needed).

But with so many different types of brushes out there, how do you know which one is right for you? Don’t worry - we’ve got you covered. To help us navigate the options, we enlisted the expertise of salon owner and stylist Ilhaam Rabin. Whether you’re aiming to maximise volume, stay tangle-free, or achieve the perfect middle part, she untangles all the choices so you can find your ideal hairbrush.

Before you choose a brush, consider:

Your hair type

Different hair types require specific brushes. Consider your hair's texture, length, and thickness. For instance, fine, straight hair may benefit from a boar bristle brush, while thick, curly hair might require a wide-tooth comb or a brush with flexible bristles.

Your styling needs

Choose a brush or comb based on your styling routine. For frequent heat styling, use a round or vented brush to speed up drying and add volume. If you prefer a natural look or need to manage tangles, opt for a wide-tooth comb or flexible bristle brush to detangle gently.

Check the material

Brush materials affect both hair quality and longevity. Natural materials like wood and boar bristles are great for fine hair or sensitive scalps, providing smoothness and shine. Synthetic bristles, while more durable and cost-effective, are better suited for thicker hair.

Flexibility and cushioning

Brushes with flexible bases and cushioning are ideal for detangling, as they minimise scalp discomfort and reduce breakage by conforming to the scalp.

Ventilation

Vented brushes speed up drying by allowing air to flow through the gaps, which is particularly helpful for thick hair.

Match your hair type with the ideal brush or comb

Paddle brush

Best for: All hair types, especially those looking to manage their long locks.

What it does: Featuring a wide base, the paddle brush is ideal for detangling, smoothing, and blow-drying large sections of hair. It helps distribute natural oils from the scalp to the ends, making detangling easier and promoting a smooth finish. To use, start at the ends of your hair and work your way up to the roots, using gentle strokes.

Detangling brush

Best for: All hair types.

What it does: Specifically designed to work through tough knots quickly and painlessly, making it ideal for wet and dry hair.

Cushion brush

Best for: Fine hair that needs a gentle touch.

What it does: For fine hair prone to static or frizz, a cushion brush can be the perfect solution. It gently smooths hair into place, adding silky shine, while the nylon pins and rubber pad help reduce static.

Boar bristle brush

Best for: All hair types but a 100% boar bristle brush with soft bristles is ideal for fine, thinning, or ageing hair.

What it does: Adds body, smooths, and enhances natural texture. The boar bristles redistribute natural oils from the scalp, promoting shine, preventing breakage, and stimulating the scalp for growth.

Nylon bristle brush

Best for: Thick, curly, or long hair.

What it does: Known for their ability to glide through hair with minimal friction, nylon brushes are effective at detangling and reducing static.

Round brush

Best for: Enhancing volume, curls, and waves.

What it does: Perfect for creating bouncy blowouts. Smaller round brushes create tighter curls, while larger ones provide looser waves and volume.

Vent brush

Best for: Thick, wavy hair.

What it does: Vented brushes allow heat from the hairdryer to reach all angles of the hair, reducing drying time and minimising heat exposure.

Edge brush

Best for: Textured or natural hair.

What it does: This firm-bristled brush is designed to style edges, baby hairs, and flyaways, providing precise control when smoothing and laying down these areas.

Wide-tooth comb

Best for: Thick, curly, or tangled hair.

What it does: Wide-tooth combs feature thicker teeth, allowing larger sections of hair to pass through easily. They detangle hair gently without disrupting the natural curl pattern.

Rat tail comb

Best for: Precision-styling and parting.

What it does: With a long, narrow tail and fine teeth, a rat tail comb is perfect for sectioning and parting hair. It’s also a go-to tool for creating sleek updos, braids, or intricate hairstyles, offering control and precision. The tail can be used to part hair neatly, while the teeth are great for combing through smaller sections.
