If your mascara leaves your eyes burning, watering or feeling uncomfortable by lunchtime, your formula could be the problem. Sensitive eyes often react to certain ingredients, especially in heavy or waterproof mascaras that are difficult to remove. The good news is that gentler options do exist. We asked Pretoria-based biomedical scientist Dr Judey Pretorius to unpack which ingredients may trigger irritation, what to look for when shopping and the best mascara formulas for sensitive eyes.

Why mascara can irritate sensitive eyes

“The skin around the eyes is very thin and sensitive, so some people react more easily to mascara ingredients, fragrances, preservatives or pigments, especially if they have allergies, dry eyes or sensitive skin,” explains Dr Pretorius. People who wear contact lenses may also find that mascara particles easily enter the eye, causing discomfort, redness or watery eyes throughout the day. In some cases, irritation may not come from the mascara itself, but from old products or poor makeup hygiene. Mascara tubes can collect bacteria over time, particularly if they are kept longer than recommended.

Ingredients to avoid

According to Dr Judey, several common mascara ingredients may trigger irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive eyes. These include:

• Fragrances

• Artificial colourants and dyes

• Preservatives such as parabens and formaldehyde releasers

• Waterproofing agents

• Lash-lengthening fibres

• Heavy pigments and waxes

How to choose a gentler mascara

When choosing a mascara for sensitive eyes, gentler formulas are key. Formulas infused with nourishing ingredients such as panthenol, glycerin or sodium hyaluronate condition lashes without causing inflammation. Dr Pretorius recommends looking for mascaras that are:

• Fragrance-free

• Hypoallergenic

• Ophthalmologist-tested

• Non-flaking

• Easy to remove

Three mascara types best suited to sensitive eyes

1. Tubing mascaras

Tubing mascaras are one of the best options for sensitive eyes because they coat each lash in lightweight, water-resistant “tubes” instead of heavy waxes and pigments. This helps prevent smudging, flaking and product particles from falling into the eyes during the day. Unlike traditional mascaras, tubing formulas stay in place on the lashes and are usually easy to remove with warm water, meaning less rubbing and irritation around the delicate eye area.

2. Fragrance-free hypoallergenic mascaras

These formulas are specially designed to minimise irritation and are typically free from common triggers such as fragrances, harsh preservatives and unnecessary additives. They are often a safer option for people with sensitive eyes, allergies or contact lenses.

3. Ophthalmologist-tested mascaras

‘Ophthalmologist-tested’ means the formula has been evaluated for use around the delicate eye area and is typically designed to be gentler on sensitive eyes. These mascaras are less likely to flake or smudge and may be free of common irritants such as strong fragrances and certain dyes.

Tips for applying mascara to sensitive eyes

If you have sensitive eyes, the way you apply your mascara can be just as important as the formula you choose. Start by making sure the eye area is clean and dry before applying any makeup, especially if your eyes are already feeling irritated or watery.

When applying mascara, use gentle, light strokes and avoid pulling on the delicate skin around the eyes. Wiggle the wand lightly from the roots of the lashes to the tips. It is best to avoid applying mascara too close to the waterline, as this can increase the chance of product particles entering the eyes.

Healthy mascara habits

Healthy mascara habits are just as important as choosing the right formula. Even the gentlest mascara can cause problems if it is not used correctly. Dr Pretorius recommends replacing mascara every three months to reduce the risk of bacterial growth and eye infections. She also advises gently removing mascara every night, avoiding aggressive eye rubbing and never sharing eye makeup with others.
