Why moisture layering is a game changer for curly hair
Winter can be especially tough on curls. The secret is moisture layering, a technique designed to help curls stay nourished, protected and defined even in harsh cold weather.
Between icy temperatures, indoor heating and friction from scarves and jerseys, curls lose moisture far more quickly during the colder months. The good news? A few simple changes to your routine can help keep curls hydrated, healthy and frizz-free all winter long.
Why does curly hair need more hydration and protection in winter?
“Curly hair is more vulnerable to dryness because the scalp’s natural oils struggle to travel down the bends of the hair shaft,” explains Ilhaam Rabin, owner of Head Quarters Hair Design, a salon in Cape Town. “Winter air and indoor heating make moisture loss happen even faster.” Because curly and coily hair are naturally drier than straight hair, winter conditions can quickly leave curls looking rough, dull and undefined. Dry air lifts the hair cuticle, causing frizz, flyaways and tangles, while woollen scarves and beanies create friction that can lead to knots and breakage. “Many people notice their curls becoming fluffier and harder to control during winter,” says Rabin. “That is usually a sign that the hair needs more hydration and protection.”
What is moisture layering?
Moisture layering is one of the most effective ways to help curls retain hydration during winter. Instead of relying on a single product, the technique involves applying products in a specific order to lock moisture into the hair shaft. Think of it like layering your skincare. Your curls need hydration, nourishment and protection to stay healthy during winter. “The biggest mistake people make is applying one styling product and expecting it to do everything,” says Rabin. “Layering products correctly helps hydrate the hair while also sealing and protecting the curl.”
The LOC method explained
One of the most popular moisture layering routines for curly hair is the LOC method. LOC stands for ‘liquid, oil and cream’, referring to the order in which products are applied. Much like hydration is layered step by step in your skincare routine, the LOC method works by first adding moisture to the hair, then sealing it in to keep curls soft, smooth and defined for longer.
Step 1: leave-in conditioner
Start with a liquid or leave-in conditioner on damp hair. This creates the hydration foundation and helps curls absorb moisture more effectively. Look for ingredients like glycerin, aloe vera or olive oil to soften and nourish dry strands. Leave-in conditioners are also great for reviving curls between wash days and reducing frizz throughout the day.
Step 2: oil
Next, apply a lightweight oil such as argan, jojoba or grapeseed oil. Oils help seal in moisture while smoothing the hair cuticle for added shine and softness. “This step is especially important in winter because oils help prevent moisture from escaping the hair shaft,” explains Rabin. “It also helps protect curls from friction caused by winter clothing.”
Be careful not to overload your strands with product, as too much can leave hair feeling heavy or greasy. Start with a small amount and distribute it evenly through each section, applying a light coating to help lock in hydration.
Step 3: cream
Finish with a nourishing curl cream or hair butter to seal in moisture, enhance curl definition and protect hair against harsh winter weather. Rich creams help smooth frizz, soften strands and prevent dryness, making them especially beneficial for thicker curls and coils that need extra nourishment during colder months. As the final step in your routine, they help lock hydration into the hair for longer-lasting softness and definition. Working in sections, apply a small amount evenly through the hair using a ‘praying hands’ motion or work it through with your fingers, paying extra attention to the ends before styling as usual.
