Why you should use dermatologist-recommended skin products

[INTRO] Caring for your skin is personal, but a qualified skincare doctor can help you select which products are right for your skin type.

When evaluating what products are right for you, Dr Maureen Allem, Medical Director and Founder of National Skin Renewal Aesthetic Clinics says understanding the difference between products which are cosmetics, cosmeceuticals, and those which are medical dermaceuticals, based on their intended use, formulation, and regulatory status.

“Cosmetics are products that are intended to cleanse, beautify, promote attractiveness, or alter the appearance of the skin or hair. They may contain mild ingredients that are considered safe for general use, and although cosmetics are not FDA approved, they are still regulated by the FDA to ensure their safety and compliance with regulatory standards. Cosmetics are not intended to have a therapeutic effect on the skin or body,” says Dr Allem.

Cosmeceuticals are cosmetic products that contain active ingredients that can provide some therapeutic benefits to the skin, such as antioxidants, vitamins, or peptides. “These are intended to improve the health and appearance of the skin and may be marketed with specific therapeutic claims. Cosmeceuticals are regulated by the FDA, but with higher regulatory standards than cosmetics.”

Medical dermaceuticals, also known as medical-grade skincare products, are products that contain potent active ingredients that have been clinically proven to treat specific skin conditions or concerns. They are designed to have a therapeutic effect on the skin and are typically sold through medical professionals such as aesthetic doctors and dermatologists. Medical dermaceuticals may contain ingredients such as retinoids, hydroquinone, or prescription-strength topical medications. They are regulated as drugs by the FDA and are subject to more stringent regulatory requirements than cosmetics or cosmeceuticals.

“So if you are wondering which to use, a basic guideline is that cosmetics are primarily designed to enhance appearance, cosmeceuticals have some therapeutic benefits, and medical dermaceuticals are designed to treat specific skin conditions and are subject to the highest regulatory standards.”

The American Academy of Dermatology says when building a skin care routine, it’s important to remember that products don’t need to be expensive to be effective. Consider using dual-function products, such as a moisturiser with sunscreen which has an SPF of 30 or higher. Learn to read labels. Look for products for your skin type that say ‘non-comedogenic’ or ‘won’t clog pores’.

Remember, A dermatologist not only helps to identify skin conditions which are harmless, they can also diagnose life-threatening diseases like skin cancer before they become a serious problem.
