10 Steps to creating a killer CV

An attractive curriculum vitae can make the difference between getting a job interview or being sent to the trash pile. Here’s our advice on how to ensure your CV gets noticed, plus a free template you can download.

Creating your CV can seem like a daunting task, especially when it's out-of-date or you're putting one together for the first time.

These simple tips from Daphne Pereira, Director of Career Development & Recruitment at The Options Group, will make the process a lot easier. 
 
1. Get organised. Gather all of the information and documents you'll need.

2. Give the CV a title. Write Curriculum Vitae at the top of the page and your full name.

3. Include personal information that adds value to the CV. This includes your residential address, contact details, ID number, and nationality.

4. Write a personal profile summary/experiential overview at the beginning of the CV. This is typically read first, summarises your skills, qualifications and achievements, and contains key words to help recruiters find the CV in an internet search.

5. List and detail your qualifications. Include the name of the institution, qualification, and the year completeds Start from your most recent qualification and work backwards.

6. Offer an overview of your computer literacy. List the programmes you are proficient in.

7. Outline your experience, work history and job descriptions. Starting from your most recent position, detail key responsibilities or experience and include information on volunteering, projects, mentorships, internships and learnerships if you have little or no work experience. 

8. Provide reference information. You can provide these details “on request” or offer the actual information on your CV.

9. Add information about interests and hobbies. Focus on those that specifically complement your career and be prepared to discuss them during an interview.

10. Format the text and do a spelling, grammar and language check.
