9 steps for supporting a child with ADHD

Has your child been diagnosed with ADHD? Here’s how you can help.

The Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Support Group of Southern Africa (ADHASA) recommends the following when raising a child with ADHD.

1. Eat Healthily

Have lean protein and unrefined carbohydrates with each meal, and encourage eating often if concentration lags. “We've had a lot of success just by changing what a child eats,” says ADHASA national office co-ordinator Carol Mewse.

2. Eat carefully

Additives, flavourants and preservatives have been shown to aggravate symptoms of ADHD, Mewse says. ADHASA also recommends avoiding trans-fats, sugar, caffeine and white flour, and having professional testing for food sensitivities.

3. Drink water

Dehydration affects concentration and you need six to eight glasses a day.

4. Encourage exercise

This channels natural energy and helps mental focus by releasing endorphins.

5. Combat stress

Stress is a major contributing factor in ADHD, says Durban clinical psychologist Robin Vanderplank, a regional representative of ADHASA, and to cope with stress we use up vitamins and minerals needed for other vital functions.

6. Try supplements

Our bodies can't make essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals, so give a quality omega oil supplement and multivitamin.

7. Keep home life calm

It's hard to think clearly and work things out when upset, says Vanderplank. Don't shout, talk things through. Have structure, and ensure children get enough sleep.

8. Respond positively

Those with ADHD are often bright and innovative – use positive reinforcement, and get help from professionals to sort out your child's specific problems.

9. Use medicine sensibly

Ritalin should be a last resort, but it can be crucial at times. “It's saved many relationships and careers,” says Dr Johan Erasmus, a Pretoria neuro-developmental paediatrician with a special interest in ADHD. “It's safe if well-controlled.”
