Remove dark circles

Sandy Roy, vice president of the SA Association of Health &, Skincare Professionals, says there are many factors that cause dark circles.

“Some people are genetically predisposed to them, allergies or hay-fever can also have this side effect and, of course, they can be caused by lack of sleep,” she says. Everyday irritants like pollution, smoke and allergy aggravators trigger a release of chemicals in the body, which enlarge the blood vessels around the eye area. As the blood enters the vessels it causes that area to darken, hence the dark circles.

However, there are things we can do to minimize this beauty hazard. A good night's sleep is a great start and homegrown soothers like cold tea bags or slices of cucumber placed on the eye area work like a charm. “Eye gels also work brilliantly,” says Sandy, “because they have a cooling, soothing effect on the blood vessels.”

Choose your make-up carefully if you want to conceal dark circles. A hydrating liquid concealer one shade lighter than your skin tone will provide moisture and coverage at the same time. If the rings under your eyes are really noticeable, choose a green concealer that will neutralize the redness of the dark circle, then apply your normal foundation.
