Being able to recognise symptoms of a heart attack and take the necessary action could help to save a life. Here is a quick explanation of the symptoms to look out for and the right action to take.

A person having a heart attack may experience one or all of these symptoms:

  • heavy pressure, crushing pain. (Note: Sharp, stabbing pain in left side of the chest is not usually heart pain.)
  • a burning, tight sensation or unusual discomfort in the centre of your chest – sometimes spreading to shoulders, arms, neck and jaw. This sensation normally lasts about 15 minutes but may decrease, stop and then return
  • sweating, vomiting, nausea, faintness or shortness of breath are also common
  • rapid weak pulse may also be present.

What to do if someone is having a heart attack

  • Call an ambulance immediately
  • It is crucial to get medical help within the first few hours after an attack
  • While waiting for the ambulance, help the person to rest quietly, either sitting up if breathless or lying down if feeling faint
