Refresh Tears lubricating eye drops contain: carboxymethylcellulose sodium 5 mg/ml.
Stabilised oxychloro complex (Purite™) equivalent to 0.005% m/v stabilised chlorine dioxide a, mild, non-sensitising preservative that, when used, ultimately changes into components of natural tears.
Pharmacological classification:
Conventional medicine: A 32.5 artificial tear and contact lens solutions.
Pharmacological action:
Refresh Tears is a lubricating formulation similar to normal tears, containing a, mild non-sensitising preservative that, when used, ultimately changes into components of natural tears.
Pharmacodynamic properties:
The pharmacological effect of the active substance, carboxymethylcellulose sodium is not receptor-mediated, but is due to its property as viscosity enhancer resulting in increasing the retention time of Refresh Tears.
Pharmacokinetic properties:
Due to its high molecular weight carboxymethylcellulose sodium is unlikely to penetrate the cornea.
Indications:
Refresh Tears is used as a lubricant to relieve irritation and discomfort due to dryness of the eye or due to exposure to wind or sun.

2. What Refresh Tears is used for:
Refresh Tears is a tear substitute and contains a lubricant called carboxymethylcellulose sodium. It is used for the treatment of the symptoms of dry eye (such as burning, irritation, dryness or eye pain).

How to use
Usage instructions:
Dosage and directions for use:
Unless otherwise prescribed, instil 1 drop in the affected eye/s 4 times a day or as needed.
4. How to use Refresh Tears:
Follow these instructions unless your pharmacist or doctor gave you different advice. The usual dose is 1 drop of Refresh Tears in each affected eye, 4 times a day or as needed. You do not need to remove contact lenses before using Refresh Tears.
To avoid contamination, do not let the bottle tip touch your eye or anything else. Always wash your hands before applying eye drops. Apply your eye drops in the following way:
1. Tilt your head back and look at the ceiling. Hold the bottle, tip lowermost, over your eye.
2. Gently pull the lower eyelid down until there is a small pocket between the inside of the lower eyelid and the eyeball.
3. Squeeze the upturned dropper bottle to release a drop into your eye. Replace and tighten the cap immediately after use.
If you use more Refresh Tears than you should:
It will not cause you any harm. If you are however worried, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. Always use Refresh Tears exactly as your doctor has instructed you. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.
Storage instructions:
Store below 25 degrees C. Do not refrigerate. To avoid contamination of the solution keep container tightly closed. Do not touch dropper tip to any surface. Do not use more than 30 days after first opening.

Contra-indications:
Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients. Refresh Tears should not be used in infants and small children under 3 years.
If eye pain, changes in vision, continued redness or irritation of the eye are experienced, or if the condition worsens or persists for more than 72 hours discontinue use and consult a medical doctor.
Interactions:
None known.
Pregnancy and lactation:
Safe use during pregnancy and lactation has not been established.
Side-effects and special precautions:
The following adverse drug reactions were reported with Refresh Tears; the most frequently reported treatment-related undesirable effect was burning (approximately 2%):
Eye disorders:
Common (>1/100, <1/10): burning, dry eye, eye irritation/pruritus.
Uncommon (>1/1000, <1/100): eyelid oedema, epiphora, eyelid erythema, conjunctival hyperaemia, eye pain, eye discharge.
Special precautions:
To avoid contamination, do not touch the tip of the container to any surface and avoid direct contact with the eye. Concomitant ocular medication should be administered 15 minutes prior to the installation of Refresh Tears.
Known symptoms of overdosage and particulars of its treatment:
No toxic side effects from systemic overdose are expected. Refer to "Side-effects and special precautions". Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Contents are sterile if seal is intact. Keep out of reach of children.
3. Before you use Refresh Tears:
Do not use refresh tears:
If you are hypersensitive (allergic) to carboxymethylcellulose sodium or any of the other ingredients of refresh tears.
In infants and small children under 3 years.
Take special care with Refresh Tears:
If you experience eye pain, changes in vision, continued redness or irritation of the eye, or if your condition worsen or persists for more than 72 hours stop using the product. In these cases, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Pregnancy and breast-feeding:
If you are pregnant or breast feeding your baby while taking this medicine, please consult your doctor, pharmacist or other health care professional for advice.
Driving and using machines:
Refresh Tears is not expected to cause blurred vision. If you do experience temporary blurring, do not drive or use machines until your sight is clear.
Using other medicines with Refresh Tears:
If you use Refresh Tears with another eye medicine, leave at least 15 minutes between putting Refresh Tears and the other medicine. Use any eye ointment or eye gel last.
5. Possible side-effects:
Refresh Tears can have side-effects. The most common side effects are burning feeling in the eye, eye dryness, eye irritation/itching (affecting less than 3 in 100 people). Less frequent effects are eyelid swelling, eye watering, redness of eyelid, redness of the eye, eye pain, and sticky eye (affecting less than 1 in 100 people). Not all side effects reported for this medicine are included in this leaflet. Should your general health worsen while using this medicine, please consult your doctor, pharmacist or other health care professional for advice.
