Bringing a preemie home is daunting, but with love and special care your baby will flourish.

There are many factors that influence the level of care required to help your preemie thrive once released from hospital, such as your baby’s gestational age at birth and whether there were health complications.

This is understandably a time of great anxiety and concern around the welfare of your little one, but premature babies are often fighters and your baby is likely no exception. Here’s how to create a home environment that supports your baby’s needs.

The power of kangaroo care

Kangaroo care, also known as skin-to-skin contact, has a profound effect on a baby’s development, particularly in the case of prematurity. Your heartbeat, voice and body heat are a great source of comfort and help stabilise your baby’s heart rate and blood pressure.

“Skin-to-skin contact is also proven to boost baby’s growth and your milk production,” says Dr Karin van Niekerk, a paediatrician at Medi-Clinic in Milnerton, Cape Town. Allow some time every day for skin-to-skin contact to help your baby thrive.

Supplements

Premature babies often require vitamins and iron supplements to boost their immune systems. If your baby has reflux – which is common in preemies – medication will be provided for this too. Administer the supplements and medications as per your doctor’s recommendations to keep your little one fighting fit.

Stay on track with vaccines

Premature babies have an increased susceptibility to infections; vaccines are therefore non-negotiable. “We recommend a special vaccine for a cold virus that can cause chest infections in winter. All the usual vaccines are also important,” advises Dr Van Niekerk.

Siblings must also remain on schedule with their vaccinations, and everyone in the immediate family should get the flu vaccine annually to avoid contracting and passing on the virus to your baby.

Know your CPR

“Parents with premature babies receive CPR training so they’re equipped to resuscitate their baby if necessary,” says Dr Van Niekerk. “You should also be taught the danger signs of a baby in distress.” Speak to your doctor if you have any concerns about how to handle a medical emergency.

Feeding your preemie

Breastfeeding is usually recommended for as long as possible. However, formula feeding is sometimes advised, depending on the circumstances.  Your paediatrician will provide a feeding plan to help your baby grow well and thrive in this time.
