An at-home skincare routine for dull, dry winter skin

01 July 2020 | By Leigh van den Berg

Does your skin feel drier, tighter and generally a little more fragile as temperatures drop? Don't worry, it’s not your imagination.

Fortunately, you can beat winter dryness with a few simple changes to your skincare routine, says Anli Geldenhuys, owner of NewLife Skin Aesthetics in Paarl.

It all starts with proper cleansing and preparation

"If you’re using a cleansing gel that’s too harsh it could be drying out your skin by stripping away its natural barrier", says Geldenhuys. “Look out for cleansers that are free from alcohol, parabens and soap. Cleansing gels can be used for normal to combination skin and cream formulations are better for sensitive and very dry skins.”

Next, don’t skip exfoliation.  “Layers of dead skin build up on your skin's surface and prevent your moisturiser from being properly absorbed. Exfoliation gets rid of these layers and increases blood flow”, says Geldenhuys. The result? Radiant-looking skin that is able to properly absorb that much-needed moisture.

If you choose a chemical exfoliator over a scrub, be sure to consider your skin type. “Lactic acid is amazing for dry skin as it’s very gentle and also hydrates, while glycolic acid might be slightly less moisturising, but is great at smoothing fine lines and improving overall texture,” says Geldenhuys.

Don't just moisturise - it's time for smart hydration

When it comes to moisturising, many people mistakenly assume getting more hydration means choosing a thicker, heavier cream. “Your moisturiser’s ability to hydrate depends on its active ingredients, not its texture,” says Geldenhuys, adding that some of the most hydrating actives aren’t very viscous. A prime example? Ultra-lightweight, yet incredibly moisturising hyaluronic acid

“Hyaluronic acid is one of my favourite ingredients. It can attract and hold moisture within the skin – almost like giving it a drink of water.” Better yet, it can also have a plumping effect that diminishes the look of fine lines. You also don’t always have to change your moisturiser, often simply adding a deeply hydrating serum is all you need to quench and plump.
