Benzac AC 5 Gel 40g is used for the treatment of acne. This water-based gel contains benzoyl peroxide, which has in vitro bactericidal activity and keratolytic properties, reducing the concentration of free fatty acids in the sebum.

Proprietary name (and dosage form): Benzac® AC 5 gel. Benzac® AC 5 wash. Composition: Benzac AC 5 gel and Benzac AC 5 wash contain 5 g benzoyl peroxide per 100 g in an aqueous gel base with glycerol and acrylates copolymer. Pharmacological classification: A 13.12 acne preparations. Pharmacological action: Benzoyl peroxide has in vitro bactericidal activity as well as keratolytic properties and reduces the concentration of free fatty acids in the sebum. Indications: Benzac AC 5 gel and Benzac AC 5 wash are indicated for the topical treatment of acne vulgaris. Contra-indications: Hypersensitivity to any of the components of the preparations. Identification: Benzac AC 5 gel: white to slightly off-white, smooth gel, practically free from odour. Benzac AC 5 wash: white to off-white, smooth gel with a faint odour. Presentation: Benzac AC 5 gel: plastic tubes containing 15 grams or 40 grams. Benzac AC 5 wash: plastic tubes containing 100 grams. Contains: Benzoyl peroxide 5 g per 100 g in an aqueous gel base with glycerol and acrylates copolymer. Indications: For the treatment of acne vulgaris.

Dosage and directions for use: Benzac AC 5 gel should be applied once or twice daily to cover affected areas after washing with a mild cleanser and water. Benzac AC 5 wash should be applied to the affected areas whilst avoiding contact with the eyes and mucous membranes. Rub in gently with fingertips and leave in contact with skin for 30 seconds before rinsing off with water. Pat dry. Use once or twice daily. Apply once or twice to cover affected areas after washing with a gentle cleanser and water. Avoid contact with eyes, eyelids, lips and mucous membranes. May bleach hair and dyed fabrics. Read enclosed package insert before use.
Store below 25 degrees C.
For external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes, eyelids, lips and mucous membranes. If accidental contact occurs, rinse with water. Contact with any materials (eg. hair or fabric) may result in bleaching or discolouration. Concurrent use with PABA-containing sunscreens may result in transient discolouration of the skin. If excessive irritation develops, discontinue use and consult a doctor. Side-effects and special precautions: Allergic contact dermatitis and dryness have been reported with Benzac AC 5 gel and Benzac AC 5 wash therapy. If severe irritation develops, discontinue use and consult a doctor. After the reaction clears, treatment may often be resumed with less frequent application. Safety of use during pregnancy, lactation and childhood has not been established. Known symptoms of overdosage and particulars of its treatment: If excessive scaling, erythema or oedema occur, the use of this preparation must be discontinued. To hasten resolution of the adverse effects, cool compresses may be used. Further treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Keep out of reach of children. For external use only.
