What causes dry skin during pregnancy?

A woman’s body goes through a lot of change during pregnancy. In many cases, hormonal changes affect the skin’s oil and elasticity, which can cause dryness and itching. Also, as skin stretches, the skin barrier can weaken, allowing more moisture to escape and causing thinner, dryer skin.

What can you do about it?

It’s a good idea to wash your face regularly as this will help to remove dead skin cells that add to feelings of dryness, as well as flakiness. Just be sure to use a cleansing product that is gentle on your skin, like Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser ,which has a mild non-irritating formula. Once you’ve cleansed your face, keep it hydrated by using a rich moisturiser, like The Body Shop Oils of Life Intensely Revitalising Cream. For chapped lips, try a nourishing balm like Vaseline Cocoa Butter Lip Therapy

If you’ve noticed dry skin on other areas of your body, you may find it helpful to add an oil to your bath. Choose one that is fragrance-free, such as Eucerin AtoControl Bath & Shower Oil, which has been specially formulated for dry and irritated skin.

After your bath, seal in the water by applying a moisturiser right away. Again, unscented products are ideal because dry skin tends to be sensitive, especially during pregnancy. Happy Event Fragrance-Free Lotion is a good option as it’s made with pure olive oil, which naturally contains high levels of vitamins A and E.

Can you avoid dry skin during pregnancy?

Although it’s not always possible to avoid dryness completely, there are a few things that you can do to take care of your skin while you are expecting. Protect your skin from the sun by applying a sunscreen every day. Bioderma Photoderm Crème Tinted SPF50+ is suitable for sensitive skins, plus it’s fragrance-free.

It's also advisable that you stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day – this will help your skin retain moisture. Try to eat a balanced diet, and include nourishing fats in your diet. Some good sources of mono and polyunsaturated fats include olive oil, nuts and avocados. Add some Clicks Smartbite Raw Mixed Nuts to your handbag for an easy snack when you’re on the go.

What should be avoided during pregnancy?

When it comes to skincare during pregnancy, it’s important to remember that your skin is likely to be more sensitive than usual. Try to avoid products that are likely to drain your skin of moisture, and opt instead for nourishing products that are formulated for dryness and sensitivity.

It’s advisable that you avoid any chemical-based skincare treatments while you are expecting, as these are sometimes absorbed through the skin. Always chat to your practitioner before a skincare treatment just to be safe.
