The right hairdryer can save you loads of time in the morning, not to mention transform your strands into smooth locks that are shiny and easy to control. Here are a few factors to keep in mind when making your next purchase

The power of the engine

“There’s nothing worse than those toy hairdryers you get in motels,” muses Couvaras. In short, they just don’t have the oomph you need. “You need a machine with a high wattage, so aim for 3800 watts,” he recommends. “You could start at 1800 watts, but if you have thick, unruly hair then go straight for the highest wattage.” Remember, the higher, more professional dryers are more expensive, but will last you so much longer.

It’s hot to be cool

“Make sure the dryer has a cool button to cool down hair and set movement into it”, says Couvaras. “When using a brush to smooth hair, or to create volume or curls, use this button to set the hair before removing the brush,” he explains.

Have the right heating

“As important as the cool button is, make sure you have proper heat control tool,” suggests Couvaras. “Setting the heat on high is great for thicker, coarser hair and use a lower heat for fine, thinner hair.” Go with the latter if your hair is more damaged, he adds. “Remember always to use heat protecting sprays before using any heat on your hair though.”

Look for attachments

“These are key”, explains Couvaras, “as your hair type dictates the shape of nozzle to reach for. A broader, less concentrated airflow space at the end of the nozzle will be gentler on hair, whereas a small, more concentrated and shorter nozzle will be perfect for smoothing and this is great for thicker hair types.”
