Judging by the latest runway shows and red carpet events, baby blue eyeshadow is back in a big way. Pale blues can be hard to pull off if you don’t have a porcelain complexion and spot on application skills, so makeup artist Ryno Mulder is here to show us how to make the translate the trend.

The right hue for you

“For medium to deep skin tones you need to prep your eyelid with a liquid concealer that’s a shade or two lighter than the rest of your face and then apply a blue powder eyeshadow on top,” Ryno says. “Or start off with a light blue cream shadow and pack it with a powder eyeshadow. This will ensure the blue shadow doesn’t look ashy against your skin.”

If you find it easier to use your eye colour as a guide, think of it this way: brown-eyed girls can wear most colours on their lids, with denim blue being one of their most flattering, on-trend shades; blue-eyed girls should wear eyeshadow a few shades darker than their eye colour. “I think the key is to make it not too perfect,” celeb makeup artist Nick Barose tells yahoo.com. “When you make it too perfect, it feels like a bad ’80s knockoff. Make it look real, not costume-y.”

The golden years

Been a fan of the trend since the ’80s? “As for older generations, many ladies never stopped wearing blue eyeshadow and if you're 60 plus, I say go with your wild self,” says Ryno. “The key with blue eyeshadow is to wear it with confidence. That and lashings of black mascara.” Choose a matte eyeshadow rather than a frosty one to avoid emphasising fine lines.

Double up

Make your new blue shadow work harder for you by using it as an eyeliner. All you do is dip an angled eyeliner brush into your pot of powder and drag it along your upper lash line for extra definition.

How to wear it

Blue eyeshadow works anytime, anywhere, as long as the application is appropriate for the occasion. Keep it muted at work but intensify the look at night by adding blue mascara for double the impact. And always pair blue lids with subtle washes of colour on your lips and cheeks – sheer pink, light coral or even nude.
