Save vs splurge: The make-up edition
Introducing your beauty budget! We’ll show you where you can save your hard-earned coin, as well as the products that are worth a splurge.
Much like creating a great wardrobe on a budget, you can save a lot of money on makeup if you know where to splurge and where to save. We chatted to makeup artist Tamryn Jefferies who offered a few pointers on how to get more bang for your buck the next time you hit the beauty aisle.
Worth the splurge
Foundation
As the name suggests, foundation is the starting point of your makeup so it’s important to invest in a good one. “Ideally, you want a foundation that includes a sun protection factor and bonus ingredients like antioxidants,” says Tamryn.
Concealer
Tamryn says a concealer needs to deliver good coverage that stays the day and doesn’t dissolve in a way that enhances the fine lines under your eyes. This is a big ask so she believes it’s worth spending a little more to find something that ticks all the boxes.
Powder
“Low-quality powder isn't as finely-milled as good-quality powder, meaning its particles are larger so it won't give you an even-looking finish,” says Tamryn. “Finding a good powder doesn't have to mean breaking the bank – I've found lots of great options at Clicks.”

Mascara
Ask any makeup artist about her top five mascaras and she'll probably include one that costs less than R250. “There are literally thousands of mascaras to pick from and the idea that only the super expensive ones are any good is ridiculous,” says Tamryn.
Lipstick
“Quality lipsticks have a creamy texture, great colour pay-off and include hydrating ingredients and antioxidants. You really don't have to spend a lot of money to find them. An expensive designer lipstick is a nice to have, not an essential,” says Tamryn.
Eyeshadow
Very low-quality eyeshadow often contains less pigment and is prone to creasing and fading. Fortunately, Tamryn says you can find a good-quality shadow that isn't expensive from pop-it-in-your-basket brands like NYX. “Whatever your eyeshadow cost, you can dramatically improve its wear with a primer,” she advises.
