06 November 2019 | Leigh van den Berg

Does the extra step of lining your lips actually make any difference to your makeup routine? An expert weighs in.

In a world of whip it on and go, is there still a place for a lip liner in your makeup bag? According to makeup artist Tarryn Fox, the answer is yes.

Colour inside the lines

“Lining your lips, especially if you use a product with a waxy texture, is still the easiest way to prevent your lipstick from bleeding into the fine lines around your mouth,” says Tarryn. “This is especially important if you’re going to wear a very vivid shade, like red.”

Plump it up

“If you have thin lips and want to create a fuller look without having to endure a needle, lip liner is your best friend,” says Tarryn. “Using it to line just outside the border of your lips will create the illusion of a slightly larger mouth.”

Shape it till you make it

You can also use a lip liner to correct the shape of lips that are uneven. After all, a perfectly symmetrical mouth isn’t as common as you’d think.

Remember to colour match

Just a word of warning: “Always make sure your lip liner is a close match to the colour of your lipstick,” says Tarryn. “A common lip liner faux pas is wearing a shade that’s much darker than your lipstick. Don’t do it! It just looks jarring and unnatural.”
