Liquid

Best for: Normal to dry skin.

Take note: If you have a very oily skin, avoid liquid foundation with a dewy finish. If you do choose a liquid foundation, finish with a translucent powder to reduce shine.

Apply it with: A foundation brush or a stippling brush for a flawless finish.

How to: Start at the centre of the face and work outwards, says make-up artist Linda O’Connell. This way you will avoid any unwanted product along the jaw and hairline.

Team it with: A cream blusher in a natural pink shade to keep your skin glowing.

Top tip: Applying liquid foundation with a brush will ensure you have a polished look, says O’Connell.

Powder

Best for: Normal to oily skin.

Take note: Avoid powder foundation if you have very dry or irritated skin.

Apply it with: Most compacts or powder foundations come with a dry sponge. If you are using it with a powder brush.

How to: If you are using a brush, start from your nose and work outwards in a circular motion, using a fairly firm pressure. If you are using a sponge, dab gently in the same circular motion.

Top tip: Use a tapping technique if you want to cover spots or pigmentation.

Our favourite foundations: NYX stay matte liquid foundation, Maxfactor Facefinity 3-in-1 foundation, Black Opal liquid foundation, Yardley Stayfast Pressed Powder, NYX stay matte powder foundation, Almay Smart Shade loose finishing powder.
