Your little bundle of joy is growing up so fast! Another year has come and gone, there are friends and playmates in the mix and suddenly it’s time for the ever-daunting birthday party. Some keep it simple with a cake, a few gifts and your nearest and dearest friends and family. Others see the occasion as an opportunity to create a wonderland and make all childhood dreams come true.
Whatever your personal preference, all parents want to make sure it’s a great day for the kids, and relatively stress-free for the grown-ups. We’ve rounded up the best tips and tricks from the professionals and our seasoned BabyClub moms to help you plan your child’s next birthday party.
A is for Activity
Keeping the kids busy is essential to a successful party. Bored children will make their dissatisfaction known, and might even get up to some trouble! BabyClub mom Koketso loves jumping castles and venues with play areas, while party planner Candice Henriques tries to incorporate fun activities like water guns, slides, and live puppet or reptile shows into her events.
B is for Budget
Birthday parties for young ones can quickly eat into your budget, especially if you have an extensive guest list. Candice recommends splurging on fun, original activities over heaps of sugary treats.
C is for Cake
While you might want to keep the sweet stuff to a minimum, a fabulous cake is a must-have. Mom Tarryn Leigh says, “For my soon-to-be five-year-old, it’s all about the cake!” Koketso likes the idea of an ice-cream cake for the warmer months.
Candice suggests a cupcake decorating station as a fun way to get the kids involved.
D is for Defence
Safety should always be the number-one priority at a party for little ones. Make sure you’re prepared for anything by having as many adults present as possible, and taking all the necessary precautions. This is particularly important in the case of a pool party, where drowning is a very real danger. “It is also a good idea to have a first-aid kit available for minor accidents,” says Candice.
E is for Eats
Kids need nutritious and tasty treats to keep their energy levels up while partying the afternoon away.
Candice recommends kid-friendly snacks like mini hotdogs, mini chicken pitas and chicken strips.
“I use low-fat milkshakes, popcorn and marshmallows over jelly beans, smarties and other sweets. I also ensure that the party bag has a yoghurt, fresh apple juice, or an ice tea,” says Candice.
